“Light Pillars”

Light Pillars are atmospheric optical illusions that look like vertical pillars of light in the sky. These spectacular bands of light are simply reflections off of tiny ice crystals in the air from sources such as the sun, the moon, and even city lights.

As you can imagine, Light Pillars occur mainly in the winter and in cold climates. In fact, you may have seen the news coverage last week with several photos of Light Pillars that were seen hovering over parts of Wyoming County, Pennsylvania.
