“Bombogenesis”
by Caleb, KE0FOE
Bombogenesis, also known as Explosive Cyclogenesis, is an extremely rapid deepening or strengthening of a low pressure system at a rate of at least 24 milibars in 24 hours. The result is a very strong pressure gradient that can create destructive winds causing power outages, flight delays and coastal beach erosion.
This exact situation is setting up as we speak over New England, and it is expected to bring blizzard conditions to that area with winds over 50 miles per hour and snowfall rates of up to 4 inches per hour.
